The Roommate (D- or .5/4 stars)
'The Roommate', directed by Christian Christiansen (there's a name) ... is one god-awful movie. The setting is at college. Sara (the extremely attractive Minka Kelly), a small town Iowan girl in the big city of L.A., is ecstatic when she's assigned a too-perfect roommate in wealthy art student Rebecca (an annoying Leighton Meester) - except, she ain't so perfect ... of course. By the 25 min. mark of the film, Rebecca becomes obsessed with her new pal - and really, for no reason other than to have a movie on our hands. Through the course of the film we learn that Sara is secretive, vindictive, volatile, self-mutilating & psychotic. She's on meds. She stalks Rebecca. And she wants anyone in Rebecca's life to be out of the picture (other female friends, and a boyfriend played by Cam Gigandet). Ridiculous melodrama & bland 'scares' ensue. And a lame duck conclusion ended my misery in watching it.
Really, this movie is terrible. First off, it's an atrocious re-tread of 1987's Fatal Attraction, mixed with 1992's Single White Female (this, more so). If only this film had half the originality & thrills as those. The only reason this film gets a D-/.5 and not an F/Zero is because I enjoy looking at Minka Kelly. Oh, and seeing both Billy Zane & Frances Fisher (2 Titanic alumni) in this wretched movie made me chuckle. I mean, really ... what were they doing in this movie? No, in all honesty, 'The Roommate' is just a straight-up bad movie, pure & simple. It is boring. There are no intentional or unintentional laughs to be had. And there isn't one positive stand-out sequence that you will remember fondly. One scene I DO remember (and not in a good way) is the deplorable use of a kitten. Inexcusable. And on a last note, the embarrassingly bad 'you think the bad guy's dead, but they ain't dead yet' lurch at the screen was in full throttle at the end. Terrible.
