Premonition (D or 1/4 stars)
I have a premonition that 'Premonition', a psychological mystery directed by Mennan Yapo, will be a bad movie. Depressed housewife, Linda Hanson (Sandra Bullock) learns that her husband, Jim (Julian McMahon, of Nip Tuck) was killed in a car accident the previous day. The next morning she wakes to find him alive & well! It must have been a dream. But then, the next day, she awakes to find him dead again ... and funeral plans need to be made. 'Premonition' is interesting for a bit, but it's just a depressing mess. Logic flounders around. And there's severe lack of an entertainment value that would ever make you want to see this again.
Linda seems to have it all: gorgeous house, a handsome, loving husband, and 2 cute daughters. Life seems o.k. until a cop comes knocking on her door one fateful morning. She's very upset (even when she wakes the next morning and sees him alive). You see, life isn't quite as perfect for Linda as we had assumed. Perhaps Jim was cheating. Perhaps she'd begun to fall out of love with him. Either way, her life has been turned upside down and she's going through the motions of each day in a dense fog of confusion and anger ... as are we, the audience.
Linda is tired; depleted; full of grief. Even her mother (Kate Nelligan) can't snap her out of it. Linda encounters various people who claim to know her (though she doesn't know them), and vice-versa. Along with this, the calendar seems to be playing tricks on her: one moment it's Thursday. The next day, its back to Sunday, the next Wednesday, they're all jumbled up! Then, we discover that Linda has/had been taking Lithium, a potent mood stabilizer. What the heck is going on here!? Why does Linda's eldest daughter have a face full of wounds? Did Linda do it subconsciously? Why has Linda found a dead crow in her back yard? Does it mean anything? Is Jim alive? Is he dead? Is Linda crazy? Sane? Can Linda save her husband from certain death, and save her family in the process?
Everything depends on if she can prevent Jim from driving on Wednesday morning. Can she prevent the accident? Should she play with fate? Or is that playing with fire? Oy, my mind was flipping so much throughout this plot, though I don't know why I put-in so much effort. The movie looks pretty good. The acting isn't poor. But the story just stinks. I don't like the religious component here. And it doesn't help the plot that Linda isn't 'completely' devoted to saving her husband (IF she can, because their marriage had been rocky anyway); there's not much dramatic tension because of this. 'Premonition' is dreary & inconclusive.
