My Best Friend's Girl (F or 0/4 stars)
I don't hate people. But if I did, one such person would be Dane Cook. I don't find him funny. I don't find him charming. I basically find him smug, offensive, & creepy. So it's obviously not a good thing that he's starring in 'My Best Friend's Girl', directed by Howard Deutch. Even if the movie was decent, I'd have a hard time enjoying it (due to Cook). But alas ... the movie is as raunchy, sexist, shallow & awful as he is.
Tank (Cook) is a great big A-hole. When it comes to dating women, he actually pretends to be one; so that they'll run back to their ex-boyfriends. Oh, how valiant. So, in theory, he's a good guy; only looking to make women realize that their 'good guy' ex-boyfriends are possible saints. Well ... that's not really fair to the girl, or the ex. What a stupid, stupid concept. Moving on ... Tank's roommate, Dustin (Jason Biggs), is one of those 'good guys'. And unfortunately for him, his co-worker Alexis (Kate Hudson) wants to end their relationship together. Desperate, Dustin hires Tank to date Alexis so that she'll realize the error of her ways.
Things go haywire when Alexis decides (before the date with Tank) to treat him as a one-night stand. She feels she deserves one. So Tank's plan to be a complete jerk to her only seems to turn her on. What does she care? She just wants to get laid. Everything falls apart because Tank actually winds up falling for Alexis (shocker). Alexis wants Tank. Tank wants Alexis, but feels bad for Dustin. Dustin is miserable. Tank's womanizing father (Alec Baldwin) has no answers. And the rest of the film plays out as one would assume. And if you can't figure it out, don't worry. Any alternate conclusion (in your head) won't be any better.
'My Best Friend's Girl' (awful title) is all about superficiality, selfishness, & backstabbing ... what fun. To call this a romantic comedy is a joke. There's nothing romantic about it. There's no chemistry. And there are almost no laughs. On top of that, none of the characters are interesting or likeable. In fact, they're all extremely UNlikeable. Alexis (Kate Hudson, whom I'm quickly losing patience for) is not the type of girl I would EVER imagine dating. She's sleazy & bitchy. Tank is the type of ugly meathead whom I would go out of my way to avoid. And Dustin is just an unsympathetic weirdo. The plot is silly. It's full of cliches. No happy ending could remedy the dullness of the prior 100 minutes. Please avoid 'My Best Friend's Girl' at all cost.
